Scope and Content
This collection contains essays written by Harry Lee Williams intended for his Arkansas Gazette column "Fragments of the Passing Years," which appeared in the Sunday Magazine section of the newspaper. The column contained reminiscences of Williams’s childhood, the "old days," and growing up during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the essays in this collection were not published.
This collection was originally numbered H-16 and is part of the J. N. Heiskell Historical Collections, courtesy Arkansas Gazette Foundation.
Biographical Note
Williams was born in March 1881 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. At an early age, he became interested in writing and was one of the youngest editors in Arkansas, serving as editor for the Jonesboro Times and the Jonesboro Daily Tribune. In 1933, he was appointed chief appraiser of the Home Owners Loan Board and in 1945, he was appointed Director of the Bureau of Vital Statistics. Williams served on several state boards and commissions, and was very active in the state Democratic Party. He wrote two books on Arkansas politics, a history of Craighead County, and a novel. Williams died in August 1967. For additional biographical information, see John L. Ferguson's Arkansas Lives, p. 605.
