Scope and Content
This collection contains scrapbooks, 1840-1954, collected by J. N. Heiskell, including volumes compiled by Walter Lemke (1891-1968), a historian and journalist at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and Margaret Ross (1922-2002), staff historian at the Arkansas Gazette.
Scrapbooks contain various newspaper articles and other materials concerning a wide range of topics in Arkansas and U.S. history, including the military, southern politics, race relations, education, and social life. Individual scrapbooks are devoted to Governors Jeff Davis and James P. Eagle, the Peabody School in Little Rock (including photographs and other student records), and the Civil War.
The Margaret Ross scrapbooks contain four volumes, organized chronologically, compiled by Ross for the Gazette's "Chronicles of Arkansas" series and the centennial of the Civil War, featuring numerous articles on the war in Arkansas and elsewhere, 1861-1865. Subjects include the secession crisis, the battle of Pea Ridge, the fall of Little Rock and the burning of Fayetteville in 1863, the hanging of David O. Dodd in 1864, and the surrender of Robert E. Lee's forces in April 1865. Also discussed are numerous battles, skirmishes, commanders, and political subjects, such as the 1862 conscription act and other measures enacted by the Confederate Congress.
