Scope and Content Note
This collection includes research, handwritten notations, paint anaylses, reports, photographs, financial records, and other materials concerning Becky Witsell's interior restroration and reconstruction projects in various locations in Arkansas, including the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Little Rock, Historic Washington State Park (including the Block House, Crouch House, Hempstead County Courthouse, Monroe House, Royston House, and Sanders House), Jacksonport State Park (including the Courthouse of 1872 and the steamboat
Mary Woods No. 2), Lafayette Hotel in Little Rock, the Moore-Hornor House in Helena, the Old State House, the Powhatan Historic State Park (including the Courthouse and Male and Female Academy), and the Smyrna Church in Searcy. Also included are newspaper clippings and articles concerning Witsell's career and art exhibits.
Rebecca Anne Rogers Witsell was born in Little Rock on 1944 August 18. She grew up in Little Rock and attended Washington University School of Fine Arts in St. Louis, where she obtained a BFA in Painting and Printmaking in 1966. After graduating, she taught in St. Louis public schools. During that time, she married Charles Witsell, an architect. She eventually moved to Little Rock, where, from 1968-1978, she worked at the Arkansas Arts Center from 1968-1978, while also teaching at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. In 1980, she co-founded Designed Communications, a studio that provided a range of design and fabrication services in architectural graphics, exhibit design, and recreation of historic painted decoration.
Witsell's artwork has been featured in numerous private collections. She has also participated in dozens of restoration projects for historic sites throughout Arkansas. Her awards include the Quapaw Quarter Certificate of Merit, the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas Award for Outstanding Work by Craftspersons, and others. She has also published in various books and periodicals concerning art restoration.
