Biographical Note

Vivian Williams was born in Hannibal, Missouri, on October 15, 1877. She took private art lessons in Perry, Missouri, and came to Arkansas to attend Central College for Girls in Conway. She taught in Arkansas public schools for many years and later wrote a prize-winning feature series for the Arkansas Gazette entitled "Arkansas Beauty Spots In Block Print." In her articles, she featured various Arkansas subjects, both man-made and natural, of historical and aesthetic significance. Water mills were a favorite topic for Utley and are featured prominently in this collection. Original wood block prints accompany the text of her stories. Vivian Williams married Circuit Judge J.S. Utley and was a member of the Society of Authors and Composers, Community Culture Club, League of American Pen Women, Arcadian Guild, and Petentes Women's Club of Little Rock. She died December 5, 1942.
