Biographical Note

Josef Rosenberg was born in Budapest, Hungary on September 28, 1892. He made his musical debut at the age of nine, giving a piano concert in Budapest and then making a concert tour of his home country. When he was thirteen, his parents emigrated to the United States, leaving him in Vienna to continue his musical studies. Rosenberg served briefly as an ambulance driver in World War I, until he contracted typhoid. After his recovery he was discharged from the military and came to the United States. In 1915, he moved to Little Rock and took a position as musical instructor at the Institute of Art and Expression. Eventually, Rosenberg opened his own private studio. He married Bessie Davis, daughter of Jeff Davis, former governor and United States senator. His long career included teaching, performing, and lecturing on music. He performed with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and organized and directed the Little Rock Choral Society and the McDowell Male Chorus. He was music critic for the Arkansas Gazette for a number of years. Josef Rosenberg died May 19, 1974.
