This collection consists of two letters written by James L. Yates while he was serving with Company C of the 106th Illinois Infantry.


Biographical Note

James Yates was born in New York, in 1828. The family later moved to Illinois. Yates enlisted in the Army on July 22, 1862, in Logan County, Illinois, and on September 17 he was mustered in to Company C of the 106th Illinois Infantry. He mustered out at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, July 12, 1865. He returned to Logan County, where he worked as a carpenter. He died July 16, 1912.
