This collection consists of one letter written by John T. Hayes while serving with the 23rd Missouri Infantry.


Biographical Note

John T. Hayes was born in Indiana, ca. 1835. He married Elizabeth Hayes from Kentucky, ca. 1860, and they lived in Linn County, Missouri. He enlisted on October 18, 1861, and mustered into Company F of the 23rd Missouri Infantry on November 22, 1861, at Chillicothe, Missouri. He served for three years and was mustered out in Savannah, Georgia, December 29, 1864. He returned to Linn County, Missouri, where he spent the rest of his life as a farmer.
