Biographical Note

Lewis Percival Fay did not immediately join the military when the Civil War started. He was the owner of a grist and saw mill in an unidentified township in Louisiana when the war began. The community wanted him to stay to grind corn for the soldiers’ families because his mill was the only one in a thirty mile radius. However, he voluntarily enlisted in the third year of the war rather than be conscripted. He joined the Bossier Rangers, a volunteer troop in a different parish from the one in which he lived. He returned home to continue operation of his mills after the war. In 1932, his reminiscences were recorded in writing by his daughter, Ida Fay Mott of Blytheville, Mississippi County, Arkansas.
