Scope and Contents

This collection consists of an original and a transcription of a letter written by Theodore P. Kellogg (aka William H. Kellogg) while his unit, Company I of the 13th Illinois Infantry, was stationed at Helena, Arkansas.


Biographical Note

Theodore B. Kellogg was born in Bennington, Vermont, Dec. 7, 1844. He was living with family members in Elk Grove, Illinois, near Chicago, when the war started. He enlisted May 24, 1861, at the age of 16, and was mustered into Company I of the 13th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He re-enlisted on January 29, 1864, and was transferred to the 56th Illinois Infantry. He mustered out at Little Rock, Arkansas, August 12, 1865. He married Sarah Draper in 1867, at Elk Grove. Following her death in 1899, he married Harriette Richardson and moved to Interlaken, New York. He died there July 4, 1921.
