Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two letters written in March, 1863, by Dudley Jones of the Third Iowa Cavalry, stationed in Helena, Arkansas,to his wife Carrie in Keokuk, Iowa, and one letter to his sister, written in 1868.


Biographical Note

Dudley Emerson Jones, born in New York ,in 1829, spent time in the California gold fields, both as a miner and a merchant. He returned to New York, married Caroline Peck, and moved his family to Keokuk, Iowa, where he was a partner in a hardware business. He enlisted in the Third Iowa Cavalry when it was formed in 1861, and was later stationed at Helena and Little Rock, Arkansas. Following the end of the war, he moved his family to Little Rock and opened an agricultural machinery company. He served as the first president of the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce when it was formed in 1866 and in 1874 was appointed a trustee for the Arkansas Industrial University (now the University of Arkansas). He died in 1913.
