Biographical Note

Alma Colgan Schmitt was born at Van Buren, Arkansas, in July 1894, and moved to Little Rock with her family before 1900. She began winning awards as a musician while a student at Mount Saint Mary Academy. Following training in New York, she taught piano and composition in Little Rock and Chicago, and had a number of musical compositions published in the early 1930s. After returning to Little Rock, she was active in the Little Rock Musical Coterie, served as choir director at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and continued to teach music. She died in October 1977.
