This collection contains the personal papers of Doris Williamson Mapes, an artist from Little Rock, Arkansas.


Biographical Note

Doris Williamson Mapes was born June 20, 1920, in Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas, to Floyd Henry and Ruby Harvill Williamson. In 1941, she married Evert Eugene Mapes, a Certified Public Accountant, from Fort Smith. They had one daughter, Eugenia Kay Mapes Caffey. Mr. Mapes died in 1983. Doris Mapes was educated at Little Rock Junior College, Hendrix College (Conway, Arkansas) and Rex Brandt School for Painting in California. She has won numerous state, regional, and national awards for her art. She is co-founder of the Mid-Southern Watercolorists and served as the organization's first president in 1970. Mapes has also served as chair of the Arkansas State Festival of the Arts, and is a strong supporter of the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock.
