Biographical Note

In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Smith-Lever Act which established the Cooperative Extension System. The mission of the Extension, with offices in most of the nation's 3,150 counties, is to "help people improve their lives through an educational process which uses scientific knowledge focused on issues and needs." Through the work of county agents and the distribution of pamphlets and leaflets, the Extension passes knowledge on to people around the country who might not have ready access to such information. Each state's Extension Service is headquartered at a land-grant university. In Arkansas, the Extension is a part of the Division of Agriculture of the University of Arkansas and, like all other Extensions throughout the United States, is a partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Just as it exists on the national, state, and county levels, funding comes from all three sources.
