This collection contains two letters written from Helena, Arkansas, in 1864, one by Colonel W. S. Brooks and one by a fellow officer following his death in battle. It also contains background information about the Brooks family, the 56th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry, and the action at Wallace's Ferry on Big Creek, July 26, 1864.


Biographical Note

William S. Brooks was born in Butler County, Ohio, in 1839, the eleventh child of Tinley and Elizabeth Brooks. In 1846, the family moved to Jefferson County, Iowa. William first served as a private in the 1st Iowa Infantry and fought at the Battle of Wilson's Creek. He later entered the 19th Iowa Infantry as a 2nd lieutenant and was wounded at the Battle of Prairie Grove. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel while serving with the 56th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry, in Helena, Arkansas. He was killed in action at Wallace's Ferry on Big Creek, west of Helena, on July 26, 1864. William Brooks' brother, Rev. Joseph Brooks, served as chaplain of the 56th Regiment and was involved in the 1874 Brooks-Baxter War over a disputed Arkansas gubernatorial election.
