This collection contains three letters written by David E. Ballard to his cousin, Elvira Harrison, during the time he was serving with the Second Kansas Cavalry in Western Arkansas and Southwest Missouri.


Biographical Note

David E. Ballard was born March 20, 1836, in Franklin, Vermont, the son of Appleton and Epathenia Ballard. The family later moved to Ohio and then to Michigan. David worked for a time for his uncle, W. H. Harrison, in Toledo, Iowa, before moving on to Kansas. He enlisted in the Second Kansas Volunteer Cavalry in November 1862, serving until February 1865. Following the war, he returned to Kansas, where he became a successful farmer and businessman and was active in local politics. He died in 1926, in Miami, Florida.
