Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a logbook kept by William A. Newton while he served with the quartermaster of the 33rd Arkansas Infantry, as well as correspondence and documents of the Newton Family. The logbook contains quartermaster records, a personal narrative by Newton, and financial records kept by him in 1885 and 1886.


Biographical Note

William A. Newton was born September 13, 1829, in Sumter County, Alabama, the son of Richard and Martha Newton. He moved with his wife and son to Columbia County, Arkansas, ca. 1859. On July 30, 1862, he enlisted in Company A of the 33rd Arkansas Infantry. After the war, he returned to Columbia County, where he farmed. He died February 18, 1908. Earnest Joseph (Nick) Newton Jr., who gathered and preserved this material, was William's grandson.
