Biographical Note

The Cole Carpet Company was incorporated in 1887, as a joint stock company. The Board of Directors and principal stockholders were Charles H. Cole, Louis Renard, Alex Moore, Frank T. Vaughan, and Stonewall J. Beauchamp. The business was located at 208-210 Main Street in Little Rock, Arkansas. The company's warehouse was on Water Street just west of Broadway Avenue. In 1889, the Board of Directors voted to change the name of the company to Arkansas Carpet and Furniture Company and to add furniture sales as a branch of the business. From 1905-1908, the firm was known as Beauchamp-Polk Carpet and Furniture Company, after which it reverted back to its former name. In 1973, the name was changed to Arkansas Furniture and Carpet Company, apparently because of a shift in emphasis to furniture sales. The company's last location was at 711 Main Street in Little Rock. E.V. Markham was the company's last president. The business closed in the early 1980s.
