Arrangement
The collection is arranged in three series: (I) Correspondence relevant to Arkansas, 1693-1765, from the Colonial Series, Archives Nationales, Paris, France; (II) Correspondence and Documents relevant to Arkansas, 1722 - 1995, from the Archivo General De Indias in Seville, Spain, and other repositories; (III) Correspondence relevant to Arkansas, 1765-1803, from the Archivo General de Indias. The materials in Series I and Series II are arranged chronologically; in series III, the materials are in chronological order by topic.
Scope and Contents
This collection of materials provided much of the information used in the articles and books that Judge Arnold has published on colonial Arkansas. Also included in the collection are printed guides and calendars of archived colonial materials located in various international repositories.
Biographical Note
Judge Morris S. Arnold has served on the United States Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals since 1992. Prior to his present appointment, Judge Arnold served on the United States District Court, Western District of Arkansas from 1985 to 1992. Before 1985, he held several high-level academic positions with various universities, including Indiana University Law School, University of Pennsylvania, and Cambridge University. Arnold has authored a number of books, including the Colonial Arkansas, 1686–1804: A Social and Cultural History and Unequal Laws unto a Savage Race: European Legal Tradition in Arkansas, 1686–1836.
