Biographical Note

Minto W. McGill moved with his family in 1857, from South Carolina, to Hempstead County, Arkansas, where he became an active member of the community. In March 1862, the Arkansas General Assembly passed a law allowing counties to levy taxes to provide support for indigent families of serving Confederate soldiers. The following month the Hempstead County Court passed an ordinance to that effect and appointed commissioners in each township to oversee the process. McGill was one of three commissioners appointed for Redland Township. In 1871, the McGill family moved to Camden in Ouachita County, where he was a leader in the founding of the Presbyterian Church. He died in 1899.
