This collection consists of two letters written by Nelson Davenport, a private in Company G of the Thirty-fourth Iowa Infantry, to his wife, while stationed in Helena, Arkansas.


Biographical Note

Nelson Davenport was born in Ohio, about 1839. He married Rebecca Galer in Mahaska County, Iowa, and the couple had three children. He enlisted in the 34th Iowa Infantry and was mustered in on October 15, 1862. He died of small pox in St. Louis on February 20, 1863.
