This collection consists of nine letters written by William H. Howard while he served with the 4th Iowa Cavalry, three letters by other family members, and one note by a fellow soldier.


Biographical Note

William H. Howard was born in Ohio, in 1835. At the beginning of 1860, his family was living in Henry County, Ohio. He married Mary E. McLean, ca. 1861. He enlisted on December 29, 1861, in Company H of the 4th Iowa Cavalry. Following his re-enlistment in December 1863, he transferred to Company K, and he was mustered out at Atlanta, Georgia, on August 8, 1865. His family later lived in Oskaloosa, Kansas, where William worked as a printer. He died in September 1904.
