Scope and Contents

This collections consists of wartime correspondence between Chaplain Ebenezer S. Peake of the 28th Wisconsin Infantry and his wife (Series I), general correspondence and documents (Series II), two pocket diaries and sixteen cartes-de-visite, as well as other photographs (Series III).


Biographical Note

Ebenezer Steele Peake, the son of William and Ann Peake, was born in Andes, New York, in 1830. He studied at Nashotah Theological Seminary in Wisconsin, and in 1852, was ordained in the Episcopal Church. After serving for six years in a mission to the Chippewa Indians, he enlisted in the 28th Wisconsin Infantry and was appointed chaplain. He was mustered out on August 23, 1865. Following the war, he served parishes in California, North Dakota, and Minnesota. He died August 28, 1905.
