Scope and Contents
This collection consists of transcriptions of correspondence of the family of Edward Richardson Dale, especially between Edward and his mother Amanda, his brother Theodore and his sisters Julia and Fannie. It includes the time of Edward's service with the 77th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, which participated in the capture of Little Rock in 1863, and the Camden Expedition in 1864.
Edward Richardson Dale was born May 31, 1844, in Newport, Ohio, to Hervey and Amanda Dale. His father was a Baptist minister and seminary professor. At the time he enlisted, he was working as a bank teller in Marietta, Ohio. He served as Assistant Quartermaster with the 77th Ohio Volunteer Infantry from August 1862, to August 1864. The unit served in Alton, Illinois, until August 1863, guarding the Arkansas Federal Military Prison. It was then ordered to Helena, Arkansas, and took part in the capture of Little Rock in September 1863. In the Spring of 1864, they took part in Steele's Camden Expedition. Dale received a disability discharge in August 1864. Following his war service, he returned to Ohio and took up his work as a banker. He died in 1899.
