Hugh Copeland, whose photograph is on the first page of this album, fought with the North Carolina Militia in the War of 1812. He later lived with his family in Indiana and Missouri, before settling in Fremont County, Iowa. Three of his sons, including John F. Copeland, the owner of the photograph album, enlisted in the 29th Iowa Infantry on August 15, 1862. Of the three, only John served for the duration of the war. He was mustered out as a first sergeant on August 10, 1865, in New Orleans. In about 1875, John settled with his family in Rush County, Kansas. He died November 5, 1912.
