Biographical Note

William Edward "W. E." Ott was born December 17, 1892, on a farm near Dexter, Missouri. He attended one-room schools for several years and also attended a business college in his home town. He served in the United States Navy in World War I, and again in World War II. Forced to leave home at the age of sixteen, Ott lived with an older brother for several months. He then became something of a drifter, living in Arkansas, Missouri, and other states. He held various types of jobs, including sawmill work, coal mining, farm labor, telegraph lineman, railroad work, bridge building, and a brief office job. Ott spent weeks or months at a time "riding the rails," working for short periods of time and staying in homes, boarding houses, hobo camps, boxcars, and hayfields. Ott moved to Arkansas in 1919. A short time later, he married Ina Backshare, also from Dexter, Missouri, and brought her to Arkansas. They lived in several locations in Arkansas, including Beebe, Searcy, North Little Rock, and Bigelow. They farmed and operated a produce business and a boarding house for a few years. Ott had several other jobs, including a few years with the Veterans Administration and working on the railroad. Ott's date of death is unknown. This small collection contains his autobiography, written ca. 1957.
