Biographical Note

Lyon College is a private liberal arts college located in Batesville, Arkansas. Founded in 1872, it is the oldest independent college in Arkansas operating under its original charter. Offered during the Fall 2005 semester, Lyon College's Arkansas Politics class was taught by James L. "Skip" Rutherford, a public relations executive and political consultant and a Batesville native now living in Little Rock. Rutherford, a self-described "political animal" and student of contemporary Arkansas politics, assigned each of the students a research project. These projects required the students to research and write a paper on one of several famous political election campaigns pre-selected by Rutherford. The election campaigns included U.S. Congressional, Senate, Governor, and Lieutenant Governor's races between 1958 and 1993. The research papers and materials collected by the students were donated to the Butler Center at the end of the semester.
