Scope and Contents

The collection contains the 1866 diary of Samuel K. Thompson of the 54th United States Colored Infantry while he was stationed in Arkansas, as well as a handwritten note and photograph.


Biographical Note

Samuel K. Thompson was born June 16, 1841, in Ohio, but his family was in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, by 1860. He enlisted in the Union army as a private on July 12, 1861. Thompson served with Company F, 5th Kansas Cavalry Regiment at Fort Leavenworth. On August 27, 1863, he was commissioned 2nd lieutenant of Company B, 2nd Regiment Arkansas Infantry, African Descent. The 2nd Regiment later became the 54th United States Colored Infantry. In November 1864, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company C, 54th Regiment. He also served some time with the 2nd Kansas Colored Infantry in Fort Smith. He was promoted to brevet captain on March 13, 1864, and brevet major on March 13, 1866. He mustered out of the 54th United States Colored Infantry on August 27, 1866, but was still in camp in Little Rock until September. After the war, he married Alice Pye of Memphis, Tennessee. Thompson later served with the 25th Regiment United States Infantry, organized after the Civil War, it was also comprised of African American soldiers. He died on July 7, 1880, in San Antonio, Texas.
