Biographical Note

Peter Hotze was born October 21, 1836, in Innsbruck, Austria, but as a young man immigrated to the United States. In 1859, he came to Little Rock, Arkansas, and entered into the mercantile business. Hotze served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He enlisted in Little Rock on June 3, 1861, with Company A, 6th Arkansas Infantry. He recorded entries into his diary from June 18, 1861 to April 4, 1862 in reference to military events and the exchange of correspondence with his brother Konrad (Conrad) Hotze. He was later wounded and taken prisoner at the battle of Franklin in Tennessee in 1864, and remained a prisoner at Camp Chase, Ohio, for the duration of the war. After the war, he married Johanna Krause and entered into partnership with his company commander, John Gould Fletcher who married to his wife's sister, Adolphine Krause. Fletcher and Hotze became successful merchants who eventually dealt exclusively in cotton. The business later required him to move to New York where he sold cotton produced in Arkansas. In 1900, he was back in Little Rock.

Peter Hotze died on April 9, 1909. His wife Johanna died in 1881. They are buried at Mount Holly Cemetery in Little Rock.
