This collection consists of a letter written by James S. Rogers while serving with the 3rd Iowa Cavalry at Little Rock, Arkansas.


Biographical Note

James S. Rogers, who was born in Illinois to Elijah and Mary Rogers, was married and had an infant daughter when the first call for troops went out in 1861. When the second call went out in 1862, Rogers enlisted as a replacement in the 3rd Iowa Cavalry. He joined the regiment at Lebanon, Missouri, in October 1862. Shortly after re-enlisting in January 1864, he became ill and was sent home. He died in Wayne County, Iowa, on March 10, 1864.
