Biographical Note

Jed Lake was born November 18, 1830, the son of Jedediah and Patience Church Lake, in Lapeer, Cortland County, New York. By 1860, Lake was a lawyer living in Independence, Buchanan County, Iowa. He married his wife, Sarah E. Myer in 1861. On August 2, 1862, at the age of thirty-two, Lake enlisted as a 1st lieutenant in the Union army, Company C, 27th Iowa Infantry. He mustered out of service as a colonel on August 8, 1865, in Clinton, Iowa. Jed Lake died on June 7, 1914 in Iowa.
