Biographical Information

Alfred H. Givens Jr. was born March, 17 1907, near the town of Dalark, Clark County, Arkansas. He went to school in Arkadelphia and attended Ouachita Baptist University from September 1924 to June 1926, before transferring to the University of Missouri in September 1926. He graduated with a degree in Journalism in 1928.

Givens worked as an advertising manager for a number of Missouri and Nebraska newspapers beginning in 1928, while working on a master's program that he never finished. In 1936, Givens took a position as a sales promotion manager for the Arkansas Power and Light Company in Arkansas.

With the outbreak of World War II, he joined the U.S. Army. Givens served as in officer in the Military Police from 1942-1944. In January 1945, he was transferred to the U.S. Army School of Military Government. After completing his studies, Givens was sent to Japan in November 1945. While there he served as a legal-government officer with the Aomori Civil Affairs Team in Aomori, Japan. Givens was released from active duty in February 1948, but spent an additional year in Japan as civilian employee of the U.S. Army.

After his military service, Givens returned to Newport, Arkansas, and worked as an advertising salesman and manager for two years for the Daily Independent Newspaper before becoming a reporter for the Malvern Daily Record.

In 1955, Givens moved to Seminole, Oklahoma, where he became a regional reporter and news-editor for the local Seminole Producer. He also severed as Director of the News Bureau at Seminole Junior College till his death in 1988.

Givens died on December 12, 1988. He is buried in Shadowlawn Memorial Park in Malvern, Arkansas.
