Biographical Information

Carl Quaintance is a champion swimmer and diver from the Little Rock area. He was born November 2, 1924, in North Little Rock and later lived in Pulaski Heights. He attended Little Rock High School from 1939 through 1941, competing in track, football, and basketball. Quaintance began his swimming and diving career in 1938 at the Little Rock YMCA, swimming the State Amateur Athletic Union (AAU)'s Boy's One-Meter and Men's Three-Meter springboard diving championship at age 14. As a varsity freshman diver at the University of Texas in 1943 he won the Southwest Conference Men's Three-Meter diving events and placed first in Three-Meter events at two dual meets in Mexico City to gain International Status. After three years service in the U.S. Navy he returned to the Texas team in 1946. He placed sixth in the NCAA Men's One-Meter finals to earn All-American status and was runner-up in the SWC Men's three-Meter diving. That same year he completed his second "Double-Double" in winning the Men's Three-Meter springboard and Men's Eight-Meter platform dicing in the Arkansas AAU Finals. He was named Arkansas' Outstanding Amateur Athlete in 1946 and had been ranked eighth place three times among the top ten divers in National Outdoor AAU competition. He is a member of the Arkansas Swimming, Inc., Hall of Fame.
