Biographical Information

The German Evangelical Church (now First Lutheran Church), Fort Smith, Arkansas, was formed in 1868. The Frauens Verein, or the Ladies Aid, was an auxiliary organization formed for the purpose of supporting foreign missions. The group also provided strong support for the local work of the congregation. The cash book in this collection records the income and expenses of the organization for the years of 1901 to 1914. Sources of income included monthly membership dues and proceeds from festivals and other special events. The funds were applied to a variety of needs for the congregation. These included repairs on the church, fees for visiting ministers, fabric for church paraments and pastoral robes, music books, and a variety of other items.
