Scope and Contents

The collection is a part of an ongoing Butler Center for Arkansas Studies project titled FORGOTTEN: The Arkansas Korean War Project. This initiative seeks to record the experiences of Arkansas's Korean War veterans through collection of documents, photographs, and oral history interviews.

This collection contains an oral history interview with Leonard W. Johnson from June 29, 2011, as well as photographs and documents related to his military service.


Biographical Information

Leonard Johnson was born in Sherrill, Arkansas, in 1927 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950 at the age of twenty-three. He served in the Korean War for approximately one year beginning in March 1951 as a corporal in the 24th Infantry Regiment, a segregated African American unit. Following the disbandment of the 24th Infantry in September 1951, Johnson was transferred to the 35th Infantry Regiment. He was wounded in action twice and received a Bronze Star for action near Kumhwa in October 1951. Johnson currently lives in Little Rock, Arkansas.
