Historical Information

The Little Rock City Beautiful Commission was organized in 1947, and was officially recognized by the city council in January 1948. The City Beautiful Commission was to be under the general control of the mayor and the city council as a branch of the Little Rock Parks and Recreation Department, and to have a broad range of duties and powers. These included beautification of the city, clean-up, protection of community health, fire prevention, preservation of trees and other plants, and protection of wildlife. Very little money was budgeted for these activities at first, and the commission relied on voluntary committees to cover various areas of concern.

The City Beautiful Commission came up with the idea of an official rose, in keeping with Little Rock's traditional nickname, "City of Roses." The Joe T. Robinson rose was chosen. Each spring, the commission sponsored a "Clean-up, Paint-up Fix-up" Week and entered a national competition. In 1950, the Miss City Beautiful pageant was begun. The City Beautiful Commission was responsible for the original plan to beautify the riverfront area and "The Little Rock" site.

The current City Beautiful Commission is appointed by the Little Rock Board of Directors. The duties of the commission are "to promote public interest in the general improvement of the appearance of the City of Little Rock; and to establish, subject to the Board of Directors' approval, regulations of aesthetic quality for public and private lands and improvements."
