Biographical Information

Walter E. Preston was the son of John Preston of Abingdon, Virginia. Walter and his brother John emigrated from Virginia to Phillips County, Arkansas, in the mid-1830s, bringing with them a number of slaves from their father's Virginia plantation. In addition to being planters, both Walter and John were attorneys, and Walter was active in politics. This letter discusses his experience in the 1848 campaign for the Arkansas Legislature, including comments on the struggle between the Whigs and the Democratic Party.
