Biographical Information

At the time of the 1860 census, Charles H. Atkins was engaged as a trader in the Little River Township of Sevier County, Arkansas. He was married to the former Julia L. Rind, and they had one daughter, Fanny. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Atkins enlisted in the Confederate Army, and he soon joined Company "G" of the 2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles. Not long after Atkins left for war, a second daughter, Anna, was born.

In May 1862, Atkins was promoted from private to 1st Sergeant. The 2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles fought at Wilson's Creek and Pea Ridge and was then dismounted before being transferred east of the Mississippi River in 1862. The regiment was involved in the defense of Corinth and the Kentucky Campaign. During the winter of 1862, the unit moved into middle Tennessee. On December 31, 1862 the Confederate Army attacked the Federals at Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Atkins was fatally wounded during the battle, and he died a few days later.
