Historical Information

The Order of the Knights of Pythias is an international, non-sectarian fraternal order founded in 1864 in Washington D. C., and was the first fraternal order to be chartered by an Act of Congress. As stated on their website, Pythians are dedicated to the cause of universal peace, and their primary purpose as an organization is to undertake social and charitable activities directed towards enhancing the great principles of the Order - friendship, charity, and benevolence.

The Knights of Pythias bases its lessons and builds it ritual largely on the story of the friendship of Damon and Pythias, historical characters living about four hundred or more years before the beginning of the Christian era. They were members of a school founded by Pythagoras, who was known as the father of Greek philosophy.

The Centennial Lodge, No. 5, of Hot Springs was founded some time prior to February 13, 1878, and continued to exist until at least 1963, the last year it was listed in the Hot Springs city directory.
