Biographical Information

Henry M. Rector (1816-1899) was born at Fontaine's Ferry, Kentucky, the son of Elias and Fanny Rector. He came to Arkansas in 1835, where his father had served as surveyor and acquired land around Hot Springs. Rector's interest in politics and connection to other Arkansas political figures led to his appointment as teller of the State Bank. After the bank failed, he worked as U.S. Marshal and later as Surveyor General for Arkansas. He lived on a plantation in the Collegeville area of Saline County. He became more deeply involved in politics, serving as governor at the time of secession. He was well known for his refusal to provide troops at the request of President Lincoln. He returned to farming following the war and died in 1899.
