This collection contains a letter written by Frederick W. Brown to his father, James M. Brown, while he was serving at Little Rock, Arkansas, with the 18th Illinois Infantry.


Biographical Information

Frederick W. Brown was born in Randolph County, Illinois, in 1843 to James M. and Rebecca Brown. He enlisted in the 18th Illinois Infantry Regiment on August 15, 1862, and was commissioned an officer on September 9. His unit participated in the capture of Little Rock in September 1863 and remained in Arkansas through the end of the war. He served until July 8, 1865, and returned to Randolph County after he mustered out. In addition to farming, he had a dry goods store for a time. He and his family later moved to Jackson County, Illinois. Brown died October 24, 1912.
