The loose items have been arranged in chronological order. The scrapbooks are also roughly chronological, although they cover the same time period.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two scrapbooks created by a student at Hendrix College in 1944 and 1945. Box one consists of loose items that accompanied her scrapbooks; box two consists of two scrapbooks, both of which cover her first year of college (September 1944-June 1945).


Biographical Information

Mattie Mae Ball was a student at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, from autumn 1944 through spring 1946. During that time, she kept scrapbooks of her college experience, including programs from concerts and church events, as well as Christmas cards, pressed flowers, and other mementos. Mattie Mae Ball was born in Keo, Arkansas, on September 9, 1925. She graduated from Scott High School in 1944 before attending Hendrix. She married William A. "Buddy" Rice on September 26, 1946. They were married 61 years until his death on August 26, 2007. Mattie Mae Ball Rice died on March 4, 2008, in Little Rock.
