The collection consists of eighteen letters written by Peter Houser to his brother, Dock, in Illinois. The letters and other documents relate to his experiences in Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Louisiana, while serving with the 94th Illinois Infantry.


Biographical Information

Peter Houser was born on December 7, 1837, in Jessamine County, Kentucky, and moved with his family to McLean County, Illinois, at the age of fifteen. He enlisted in Company B, 94th Illinois Infantry in August 1862, and fought at the Battle of Prairie Grove and the Siege of Vicksburg. He was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps in 1864, and was discharged in July of that year due to illness.
