Biographical Information

Joel (Joe) Treadwell Henslee Sr., born July 29, 1901, was raised in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and graduated from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. He was a professional minor league baseball player, farmer, civil engineer, and county roads supervisor before being elected Jefferson County Judge in 1954, a position he held until he retired in 1979. For his work as County Judge, he received the Arkansas Certificate of Merit both in 1972 and in 1974. When the Jefferson County Courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1976, Judge Henslee was instrumental in getting it rebuilt. Joe Henslee Sr. and Louise Turner were married on June 26, 1931. The couple had two sons, Joe Jr. and William. Joe T. Henslee Sr. died in December 1981.

Joe T. Henslee Jr. was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, on March 5, 1932. He graduated from Rice University, Houston, Texas, and, after serving as an officer in the Navy, returned to Arkansas. He was the plant manager of Granite Mountain Quarries, Little Rock, Arkansas, until his retirement. Joe Henslee Jr. was married to Carolyn McGeorge Henslee and the couple had four daughters: Susan, Lou, Julia and Donna. He was an active member of Pulaski Heights Methodist Church. Joe T. Henslee Jr. died on October 14, 1997.

Other family members represented in the collection are Carolyn McGeorge Henslee's parents and Susan Henslee McGowan's husband, Dr. Robert McGowan Jr., and father-in-law, Robert McGowan, a World War II veteran.
