Arrangement

The ledger books are arranged topically and chronologically. Loose papers are arranged chronologically.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains of seven ledger books and three folders of loose material. The vast majority of the material is related to Retan's real estate holdings and transactions during the development of Pulaski Heights, Little Rock's first planned suburban community. Some of the loose material also contains personal correspondence.


Biographical Information

Albert Retan was born in New York in 1846. He migrated to Michigan where he worked as a clerk in a dry goods store. While in Michigan, he invested in Arkansas real estate with a group of investors. The investment would become known as Pulaski Heights, Little Rock's first planned suburban community. Retan also moved to Little Rock with his family and became one of the first residents of the community. The Albert Retan house at 506 North Elm Street in Little Rock was built in 1893 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Retan died in Hennepin County, Minnesota, on October 30, 1909, and was survived by his wife, Melissa, and their two children. Pulaski Heights became an incorporated town in 1901 and was annexed by the city of Little Rock in 1916.
