Scope and Contents

This collection contains photocopies and transcriptions of two letters written by Augustus Breysacher to his fiance Caroline Pynchon, from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, in early 1866. The letters tell of his efforts to establish a practice, as well as people and activities in Pine Bluff's post-Civil War community. The collection also includes Caroline Pynchon Breysacher's handwritten cookbook and a recording housekeeping expenses.


Biographical Information

Caroline Drucilla Pynchon Breysacher was born in 1841 in Georgia, to Edward and Harriet Pynchon. She met Dr. Augustus Breysacher while he was stationed at Huntsville, Alabama, with the Confederate Army. They married in January 1867, and moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where Dr. Breysacher had established his practice the previous year. In the early 1870s, they moved to Little Rock, where he established a practice at Markham and Main Streets. He was one of eight doctors who founded the Arkansas Medical School.

Augustus and Caroline were the parents of three children. Caroline was active in various women's clubs and philanthropic activities in Little Rock. She died July 29, 1893.
