Arrangement

Boxes one and two contain loose items, arranged in chronological order. These are minutes and reports of the Little Rock YMCA board of directors between 1910 and 1990. Other loose papers covering the years 1992-2004 were also included. The older records are very fragile and require careful handling; photocopying is not recommended. Other records were bound into books. These also have been arranged in chronological order in the latter part of the collection. These items fill boxes 3-6. Many of the earlier records are reproduced in the bound volumes.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains many of the working agenda, minutes, and reports of the board of directors for the Little Rock YMCA, principally between the years 1910 and 1990. A few additional documents supplement the official reports, including several folders containing information about the more recent history of the Downtown YMCA building.

Historical Information

The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) was founded in London in 1844 to provide a refuge of Bible study and prayer for young men seeking escape from the hazards of life on the streets. The organization aimed to meet social needs in the city and to cross barriers caused by differences in social class. The first YMCA in the United States opened in Boston in 1851. The Little Rock YMCA was established in 1885.
