Arranged in three series:Series I: Regimental Records. Arranged alphabetically by state with regiments grouped together by Infantry, Cavalry, or Artillery. Each type of regiment is then arranged by its unit number. U. S. regiments [black and white] are at the end of Series I. Large groups of regimental files are arranged loosely by subjects; smaller regimental files are arranged alphabetically by file title. All miscellaneous regimental records are arranged at the end of their respective state.Series II: General (non-regimental) Records. Loosely grouped by document type or, where practical, by issuing agency.Series III: Confederate Records. Loosely grouped by document type or, where practical, by issuing agency.
Scope and Content
This collection contains official orders, reports, musters, vouchers, forage records, supply lists, equipage lists, court-martials, and other materials for Union and Confederate units that served in Arkansas. The majority of the material (20 boxes) contains records of Union regiments. Additional records (3 boxes) are from Union units that are larger than regiments (divisions, corps, etc.). Confederate records (1 box) are all non-regimental in scope.
Records for each regiment vary from one document to as many as eight boxes. Regiments with a minimum of 3 files are: 2nd Arkansas Infantry; Arkansas Military Commission, Little Rock; 13th Illinois Cavalry; 18th Illinois Infantry; 43rd Illinois Infantry; 9th Iowa Cavalry; 12th Iowa Infantry; 12th Michigan Infantry; 1st Missouri Cavalry; 25th Ohio Battery; 6th U. S. Colored Infantry; 60th U. S. Colored Infantry; 113th U.S. Colored Infantry; 3rd U.S. Calvary; 19th U.S. Infantry; 28th U.S. Infantry. Among the more significant records are 25 files (Box 16, File 14 through Box 18, File 10) from African-American regiments, and 8 boxes of files from the 25th Ohio Infantry.
