Historical Note

During World War II, 110,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly removed from their homes on the Pacific Coast and Hawaii by the U.S. government, as authorized by Executive Order 9066.

Signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt on 1942 February 19, the order granted the U.S. government authority to declare areas in the United States as military zones and relocate anyone with "foreign enemy ancestry" who were living in those areas. The entire West Coast and Hawaii were among the designated military areas, which led to the mass internment of those with Japanese heritage. Japanese Americans were forced to leave their homes and move to assembly centers, where they would then be transferred to an internment camp. In all, ten internment camps were constructed across the country.

Two internment camps were located in Arkansas: Rohwer Relocation Center (Desha County) and Jerome Relocation Center (Drew and Chicot Counties). Jerome Relocation Center operated from 1942 October 6 to 1944 June 30; Rohwer Relocation Center, from 1942 September 18 to 1944 November 30.
