Scope and Contents

This collection contains notes and drafts of Maude Bethel Lewis's writings, including Arkansas Under Four Flags: A Pageant of History and an updated version titled Arkansas Under Seven Flags. It also contains business papers, some correspondence, and newspaper clippings.


Biographical Information

Maude Bethel Lewis (1874-1961) was an author and poet who lived in Stuttgart, Arkansas. She married George C. Lewis in 1897. She was the founder of the Stuttgart Women's Club and served as the first president as well as the poet laureat of the club.

Lewis served on the Arkansas Parks Commission, where she became deeply involved in the preservation of Arkansas Post. She wrote a play titled Arkansas Under Four Flags: A Pageant of History for the state's centennial in 1936 that was performed at Arkansas Post.
