Arrangement

The newspaper clippings in this collection are arranged chronologically.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of clippings from the Arkansas Gazette observing the centennial of the Civil War with daily accounts written by Margaret Ross, called "Chronicles of Arkansas, The Years of the Civil War." A few additional clippings, including other "Chronicles of Arkansas" written by Margaret Ross, are included.

Many clippings are missing from the collection, particularly from 1962. In most cases each file contains clippings from one month. All but five of the "Chronicles of Arkansas" clippings are from Ross's series, "The Years of the Civil War," which began January 1, 1961, and continued daily until May 9, 1965. Four other clippings from the Gazette of the 1960s are included in the final file of the collection.

Biographical Information

Margaret Deane Smith Ross (1922-2002) was one of the most prolific and popular writers about Arkansas history in the middle of the twentieth century. Among her other accomplishments, she was staff historian for the Arkansas Gazette. In the years 1958 to 1968 she wrote a weekly column for the Gazette which was called "Chronicles of Arkansas." On January 1, 1961, her column became a daily feature (although the Sunday editions were longer than those of the rest of the week) marking the centennial of the Civil War with information each day about how the war proceeded and the effect the war had upon Arkansans. The column appeared in the Gazette every day until May 9, 1965, at which point "Chronicles of Arkansas" again became a weekly feature.
